About Agra

Agra, is home to one of the modern day Wonders of the World, the Taj Mahal. It is located in the Northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh around 200 km south east of New Delhi. Agra is steeped in rich history. During its heydays it was the capital of the Mughal Empire between 1952 and 1658. Through the centuries it changed hands many times and was ruled by both the Hindu and Muslim kings. The Mughals were great builders and the various monuments built in and around Agra are testimony to their architectural prowess. Agra has a mention even in the epic Mahabharat.

Situated on the banks of River Jamuna, the Taj Mahal along with the Agra Red Fort and Fatehpur Sikri are recognised as UNESCO World Heritage sites. Agra is one of the destinations of the tourist 'golden triangle' of Agra-Delhi- Jaipur and is a must see for international tourists visiting India.

Places to see

  • The Taj Mahal: This mausoleum of love was built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of this wife Queen Mumtaz. It took almost 20,000 labourers, working between 1630 and 1652, to complete this architectural gem of a structure, which still stands tall today. The interiors are decorated with beautiful inlay work on marble with gems and other semi-precious stones decking the walls of the tomb. It is advised to visit the Mahal at two different times of the day (dawn and dusk), to appreciate the way the natural light plays on the white marbled walls.
  • Fatehpur Sikri: During Emperor Akbar`s reign, it used to be the political capital of the Mughal Empire, between 1571 and 1585, after which it was abandoned, due to water shortage. It`s imposing gateways and intricately designed palaces, each perfect in its own way, was built by Akbar for his favourite Queens.
  • Red Fort: Also known as Lal Qila, Fort Rouge or Red Fort of Agra, this fort has a design similar to the Red Fort at Delhi. This well preserved fort was built by Akbar The Great between 1565 and 1571. The red sandstone structure is around 2.5 km northeast of the Taj Mahal. The fort is a masterpiece of Mughal creativity; within its premises are present tombs, palaces and residential buildings. The crescent shaped fort can be better described as a walled palatial city.
  • Sikander: This suburb of Agra located 13km from the Agra Fort, is also the final resting place of the dynamic and greatest of Mughal Emperors, Jalal ud-Din Muhammad Akbar. He was a very powerful King, much loved by his people and admired for his secular mind.

There are many mausoleums in Agra, each one unique and exquisitely decorated. Some of them are:

  • Itmad - Ud Daula: Situated across the river Yamuna is the tomb of Mirza Ghiyas Beg built by his daughter Noor Jehan. It is a fine example of the deftness of the Mughal craftsman. Pietra dura inlay and lattice work marble screens deck the memorial.
  • Chini Ka Roza: Hardly 1000m from the Itmad-ud-daula, lies the tomb of Afzal Khan, the Persian poet and minister at Shah Jehan's court. It is named thus due to its decoration made predominantly of brightly coloured glazed tiles.

The Mughals were also very extravagant in cultivating gardens around the town. Some of the more popular ones are Swami Bagh, located 10 km north of Agra, Ram Bagh, one of the first Mughal gardens and Mehtab Bagh, located on the bank of River Yamuna across from the Taj Mahal. The view of the Taj Mahal from this location is fascinating and every bit unique.
