About Ooty


Ooty (Ootacamund/Udhagamandalam) is a popular hill station in South India and is located 297 km away from Bangalore. Ooty is 7,347 feet above sea level in the mountainous range of Nilgiris. Ooty was under British rule in the early 19th century, and served as the summer capital of Madras Presidency. Ooty is well connected by road and rail and can be reached easily from Bangalore.

The weather in Ooty is 15 - 20C around the year and attracts swarm of tourists every year. The landscape is marked by dense forest areas, rolling hilly region, tea garden and eucalyptus trees. There are also a wide variety of flowering plants and bushes in myriad colours and a fern house with an extensive range of ferns and orchids.   • Dobbabetta Peak: Doddabetta peak is 8650 feet above sea level and is the highest point in Nilgiri hills. It is known for the flattened curve of its summit. There is an observatory with two telescopes available to enjoy the panoramic view.
  • Lake: Ooty lake was artificially formed by John Sullivan, founder of Ooty. It is one of the popular sightseeing spot in Ooty. Boating is the main attraction on this lake. This is also a hub of entertainment with children's park, shops and ponies for ride.
  • Rose Garden: The Government Rose garden is the largest rose garden in India. This garden has more than 20,000 variety of roses including unusual colours like black and green.
  • Pykara Falls: Pykara falls is located 19 Km away from Ooty. Pykara is the largest river in the district. There is a dam close to the falls and also a power station. The boat house near the falls is an added attraction.
  • Government Museum: This museum was set up in 1989 and holds many arts and artifacts of the local Toda tribe. It is open on all days, except Fridays, Second Saturdays and National Holidays.
  • St. Stepens Church: The church was founded in the 1820s and is one of the important colonial structures of Ooty.
  • Tea Factory: There are several tea factories in and around Ooty. Many factories offer guided tour and tea tasting.

  • Nilgiri Mountain Railway: Nilgiri Mountain Railway is a UNESCO World Heritage site and connects Ooty with Mettupalayam. It travels through many curves and tunnels and is also fondly called the 'Toy Train'. The Uphill journey takes close to 5 hours and downhill journey takes almost 4 hours.
  • Coonoor: Coonoor is the second largest hill in Nilgiri and is situated around 19 km from Ooty. It has several popular attractions like Sims Park and Lambs rock. It can also be reached by the Nilgiri Mountain Railway.
  • Mudumulai Wildlife Sanctuary: This sanctuary is located around 67 km from Ooty. It is an important wildlife habitat in the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. The sanctuary is spread over an area of 321 square kilometers and shelters Bengal Tigers, Indian Leopards and other threatened species.
  • Kotagiri: Kotagiri is the largest hill station in Nilgiris and is located 30 Km away from Ooty. The important sightseeing spots are Catherine Falls and Kodanad view point.
  • Avalanche: Avalanche lake and dam are situated 25 Km away from Ooty. This valley is surrounded by shola trees, orchids and magnolias.
